Product Overview
The Omron E3Z-LR81 is a compact laser retro-reflective photoelectric sensor from the E3Z-LR family, designed to detect objects that defeat a standard retro sensor — shiny foil labels, polished metal cans, glossy cartons, and small surface-mount components. It uses a Class 1 visible red laser (660 nm), paired with a polarising MSR (Mirror-Surface Rejection) filter that ignores the specular reflection from a flat shiny surface and only registers the diffuse return from a reflector placed directly behind the target.
Picking the right code
E3Z-LR is the laser retro family. The third digit picks the output and connector: 1 is PNP open-collector with a pre-wired 2 m cable, 6 is PNP with an M8 4-pin connector, 8 is NPN with an M8 4-pin connector. NPN pre-wired is the E3Z-LR11 2M. Reach 15 m with the standard E39-R1 reflector at a 5 mm spot, or use the E39-R2 / E39-R6 for a 200 mm spot and 7 m range — useful when the target path is small and a wider beam avoids aiming errors.
Before ordering
Power the sensor from a 12-24 VDC ±10 % supply. Set Light-ON / Dark-ON on the rear switch; for shiny-foil detection on a conveyor, Dark-ON usually works better because the polarising filter rejects the direct mirror return. Verify the M.S.R. reflector side faces the sensor (the opposite side from a normal reflector mark). For transparent bottles, switch to E3Z-B61 2M; for a clear-PET line, plain retro reflex cannot tell PET from air.

Best-Fit Applications
- Detect blister packs and foil-wrapped pharma cartons on a conveyor
- Trigger on polished metal cans or magnetic components leaving a wash station
- Pick-and-place verification on a glossy PCB panel before reflow
- Count glossy ceramic or glass-fronted appliances on an end-of-line conveyor
- Position check on a small shiny part where a wide 200 mm beam avoids alignment drift
Buying Checklist
- Pick E3Z-LR86 with an M8 connector instead if you prefer a quick-disconnect flying lead.
- Pick E3Z-LR61 with an M8 connector instead if your PLC expects NPN inputs.
- Pick E3Z-R61 2M non-laser polarised retro instead if a 4 m LED retro works on your labels.
- Pick E3Z-B61 2M clear-PET retro if your line runs clear plastic bottles.
- Pick E3Z-LL86 if you need BGS laser distance sensing instead of through-beam-style detection.
- Order at least one E39-R1 reflector (sold separately) — the sensor alone does not include the reflector.
