Product Overview

The NX-SOD400 is a 4-point safety output module for an NX-series EtherCAT slice. Each point is a 24 VDC PNP output rated at 0.5 A, with a total of 2 A per unit. Wire a redundant pair of outputs to a safety contactor coil and you get PLe / Category 4 / SIL 3 — the level most European and global machine builders target. The unit runs internal cross-fault checks on each output every cycle so ground or short faults are caught immediately.

Where it fits in a safety panel

Use the NX-SOD400 in panels that need four safe outputs — typically a robot-cell controller driving the robot stop, a door-lock release, an EDM (External Device Monitoring) input, and one spare. It pairs only with NX-SL Safety CPUs (SL3300 up to 16 safe I/O, SL3500 up to 32, SL5500 up to 128). It does not work with the regular NX102, NX502, or NX1P2 non-safety CPUs.

Getting the safety classification right

Two redundant outputs wired and cross-fault monitored together give PLe / Cat 4. A single wired-only output drops to Cat 1 / PL c, which is rarely the level you want. The wiring diagrams in the NX-series Safety Control Unit manual (z930) show the certified configurations for Cat 4. If you need higher current per output (2 A instead of 0.5 A) but only two outputs, use the NX-SOH200 instead.

Before ordering or installing

Order a matching NX-SL Safety CPU (SL3300, SL3500, or SL5500) — the NX-SOD400 does not work with non-safety NX CPUs. Plan the slice unit-power budget: high-density safety I/O can exhaust the coupler, in which case add an NX-PD1000. Use the manual's wiring diagrams to wire each redundant output pair; do not rely on a single output for Cat 4.

FAQ for NX-SOD400

What is the difference between NX-SOD400 and NX-SOH200?
Both are NX safety outputs with PNP sourcing at 24 VDC. NX-SOD400 (this SKU) has 4 outputs at 0.5 A per point and 2 A per unit. NX-SOH200 has 2 outputs at 2 A per point and 4 A per unit. Pick the SOD400 when you need four outputs of normal safety contactor current. Pick SOH200 when you need to drive a high-inrush load or a stack of indicator lamps.
Which Safety CPU do I need?
An NX-SL Safety CPU. SL3300 supports up to 16 safe I/O points, SL3500 up to 32, SL5500 up to 128. The NX-SOD400 cannot operate on NX102, NX502, NX1P2, or other non-safety NX CPUs — the safety protocol (FSoE or CIP Safety) requires the dedicated SafetyLogic CPU.
Can I use this as a regular output?
No. The NX-SOD400 only works under an NX-SL Safety CPU using FSoE or CIP Safety. For non-safety PNP outputs in an NX slice, use NX-OD4121 or NX-OD4256. You can mix safety and standard I/O in the same slice, but only via the right products.
What is the maximum load per point?
0.5 A continuous per point, with a total 2 A per unit. The on-state residual voltage is 1.2 V and the off-state leakage is 1 mA per point. A standard safety contactor coil pulls in well under 0.5 A, so 0.5 A is usually enough. If your load exceeds this, switch to NX-SOH200 (2 A per point) rather than adding a second NX-SOD400.
